The Induction

We had been anxiously awaiting the arrival of our newest addition and finally the day arrived!  We went to the hospital around 7:30 to start the whole induction process.  It takes some time to get in the room and have blood drawn etc. so they didn't actually start the induction until around 9:00.

Everything was going fine, until about noon, when my legs got SO numb from the epidural that I couldn't even wiggle a toe.  I literally could not move from the waist down.  I started to panic in my head.. not because I thought something was wrong, but because my brain wanted to move at least a toe and I couldn't.  It was the weirdest thing, but I started crying about it!  They reassured me that I was not crazy, that one girl tried to actually get out of the bed and walk once.  They did say I was more numb than most, so the nurse turned off the epidural machine for a little bit.  She said once I started feeling some pain, to call and they would turn it back on.  The good news was that I started to feel again, the bad news is that I started to feel too much.  Here is a pic of Mark and I joking around. This was at a point when I was feeling some contractions, but I could still joke about it.. haha

Ely came in to wish me good luck

So I paged the nurses to tell them I was feeling pain, and they turned the machine back on.  However, it was never the same!!  It was wearing off for some reason.  NO!!  I was getting really close.. the nurse came in and I was dilated to a 9 and in a ton of pain. Like holding the side railing and crying!  Mark literally ran out into the hall and said "Give her something Now!!"  Right before it was time to push (oh, and they said don't cough because if you do the baby will come out) this lady pulled the plug on my epidural and injected something into my IV and said it was the strongest thing they had.  Ummm yeah it was!  Within 2 minutes I was back to being numb.  However,  I wasn't thinking about being numb anymore because I had a baby to push out.  Dr. Harms came running in, and I only had to push 2 times!!!  I saw the reflection in her glasses and watched the whole thing. It was SO amazing.  Mark and I were crying like babies :)

  1. Aww! I love that story--not the part about you being in pain but the fact that Mark took such great care of you. :)
